As you and your team return from vacation, remember that cybercriminals never rest. Research from ProofPoint and Check Point reveals a surge in phishing attacks during summer months. Here’s how to stay vigilant and safeguard your business.
Why Are Risks Rising?
Cyber attackers exploit summer travel trends by impersonating hotel and Airbnb sites, according to Check Point Research. They found a 55% jump in vacation-related domain registrations in May 2025 compared to last year, with 1 in 21 flagged as malicious or suspicious among over 39,000 new domains.
Additionally, the back-to-school season triggers a rise in phishing emails mimicking university communications, targeting students and staff. Even if your business isn’t directly affected, employees checking personal emails on work devices can inadvertently expose your entire company to cyber threats with a single click.
How to Protect Your Business
While AI enhances cybersecurity, it also enables more convincing phishing scams. Training yourself and your team to recognize warning signs is critical to avoid falling victim.
Follow these essential safety tips:
• Vigilantly scrutinize suspicious emails. Don’t rely solely on spotting spelling errors or awkward grammar—AI can craft deceptive messages. Check sender addresses and link texts carefully to verify authenticity.
• Verify URLs meticulously. Look for misspellings or unusual domain extensions like .today or .info, which are common in scam sites.
• Access websites directly. Instead of clicking links in emails or messages, type the website address yourself or use a trusted search engine.
• Enable Multifactor Authentication (MFA). MFA adds a vital security layer, protecting your credentials and sensitive data even if a breach occurs.
• Use caution with public WiFi. When using public networks, always connect through a VPN to secure sensitive activities like bookings or banking.
• Avoid personal email on work devices. Keeping personal accounts separate from business devices reduces risk and helps maintain security boundaries.
• Consult your MSP about endpoint security. Endpoint Detection and Response (EDR) tools monitor devices, block threats, and alert your MSP instantly to minimize data exposure.
Phishing scams grow increasingly sophisticated every day, accelerated by AI advancements. The best defense is ongoing education—keep your team informed and vigilant to protect your business. Stay alert and stay secure!
